I agree with you. Well said.

I was fascinated listening to 3 dudes at once and then it singled down to comments about passing on a moral centre to children.

Of course the person now responsible for your kids morality is their school teacher. It must be. Because lots of parents won't take any responsibility if their kid becomes a problem during class time. It's the teachers fault.
Talk to an elementary school teach and see what I mean.

Also pertaining to your Canadian Tire card. I use it the same way. it's a points/rewards card where I can actually use the rewards. The rest of them are pretty much useless as I won't live long enough to collect enough points to buy anything.

Based on population, a dialect of Chinese (probably Mandarin) probably should be the second official language of Canada instead of French.

Ouch! the line "Based on population, a dialect of Chinese (probably Mandarin) probably should be the second official language of Canada instead of French." Thems fighting words! As only an Albertan can do! You guys just love to rile us folk back east eh! Canada (especially to someone born in La Belle Province) is all about it's history and geography- and that means Je Me Souviens! The French were here before the English and long before the Chinese, and our official bilingualism (French & English) is one of the things that sets us apart from the USA, and holds us together as Canadians. But hey, why write when I can rant on this next show. As always comments much appreciated - merci beaucoup Bunky Boy!

Remember when we were young and we'd hear old farts complain about the general decline in values? Now that we are getting to be old farts ourselves we see the trend continuing. It is disturbing. You're right. Parents are dropping the ball. Teachers can't do the job for parents. It is NOT their job anyway.

Only you could get away with playing clips from Norm Augustinus. It's interesting to hear your comments about him. I feel exactly the same way. Somewhere in there, amid the globules, the diatribes, the dildos and fucksticks is a sensitive, brilliant individual and an amazingly creative spirit. Most people wouldn't get that, though. Do you like that? I like that.

I agree with your idea that an education is about the development of the person. And at least in the 19th century at the beginning of American Public Schools, the idea was to stir and mix the melting pot and create good citizens.

Now, I went to school to be a high school teacher, like some of my uncles and aunts. Unlike them I was an art teacher and I realized after a few years in the trenches what I really wanted to do was create art, which I went on to do.

Unfortunately my father felt that I was wasting my education by not pursuing a career as a teacher - and he was a child of the depression. So I don't think it's generational for people to be confused about the role of school in our lives. In a nutshell I guess everyone can agree that through education you can create a better life, but how you qualify better, there's the rub.

I'm also glad to hear you get your Irish up about Canadians sending money to take care of the American poor. I agree, it is well intentioned misdirection. Take care of the mote in your eye before you look after the spec in someone else's.

Personally I've always seen the relationship between the States and Canada as being more like brothers (or sisters), rather than cousins, maybe because I didn't have much connection with my cousins. But within my family the personal and professional paths my brothers took are wildly different. So different and so alike. But like brothers, each one has the right to live his own life, realize his own identity.

I've been in the States for many years and rarely do I find that anyone gets that. I think they feel Canadians are just being stubborn about being different and it's not worth the bother of arguing about it.

Wait so I finally agree with you Dude and you say nothing about it. I guess controversy is the best content. In that case your a bigot, and racist and a ageist and anything else.....

Not really... There has been more then a few political scientists that argued that multiculturalism destroys national unity but it turns out in their research it is simply not true. What they did find was despite positive indicators of political/ social integration (things like political involvement, participation in charities etc) there was a highly level of distrust among immigrants and many of them felt they weren't really Canadians. The highest percentage was in Quebec (where much of the battle on the limits of "reasonable accommodation" described in the Charter) of immigrants its the highest. Most likely because they take such a anti-accommodation stance. So it seems the reason why immigrants don't integrate as well as they should is not because of multiculturalism but our initiatives aimed at making them apart of Canadian society.

MMD - I was so stunned by your first comment, 'I agree with you', that I didn't know what to say. Your follow up comment was interesting and calls for further discussion. Hey, if I didn't take up so much time myself rambling on I could have you on the show as a guest. Or maybe you could record you next comment for us- I'm sure you'll have something to say about my rant at the end of #103. (BTW, if you want a copy of the offensive Welfare 'poem' I can end it to you)

Give me a week or so and i'll be able to record audio comments again. School is almost done and i'm hanging in there but just by the skin of my teeth. Why does teeth have skin anyways?

oh...and we all vote in blocks now, they're just not separated by lines of nationality, they're separated by lines of social status, wealth, and geography.

I LUV getting comments, but sometimes I don't understand them. Wouldn't it be great if old podcast pioneers like Ross Zeeshave would send in audio clips!
